Education Minister Grace Grace today joined the local school community in the opening of the state-of-the-art Foxwell State Secondary College.

“This is an exciting milestone for the Foxwell school community after what’s been a difficult year for our Queensland state schools with COVID-19,” Ms Grace said.

“I’m proud of Principal Kym Amor and her staff for ensuring that learning continued for the students at Foxwell during term 2.

“Today we’re celebrating the official opening of Stage 1 of this $64 million school which is providing a world-class education for all students.

“Foxwell is one of many major school projects we’re investing in on the Gold Coast.

“Coomera is a rapidly growing part of the world which is why we’re building a new primary school at Pimpama opening in 2021 and a special school in 2022.

“This Government is no stranger when it comes to investing in Gold Coast state school projects, with half a billion dollars invested since 2015.”

Ms Grace said Foxwell SSC was built on time and on budget for the start of the 2020 school year, supporting 190 local jobs.

“The school welcomed around 200 year 7 students on January 28 this year,” Ms Grace said.

“Stage 1 included junior classrooms, an administration building, information service centre, central covered lunch area and canteen, a sports performance centre, play space and car parking.

“The students love their brand new school, with more facilities to be built to accommodate years 7-12 by 2025.”

Ms Grace said Stage 2 of Foxwell would be ready for the 2022 school year.

“We recently announced that we’re moving ahead with Stage 2 and I’m excited to watch the school grow and develop, and for the students to enjoy the new facilities we’re building,” she said.

“Stage 2 will include a kitchen and food studies learning spaces, science labs, construction workshops, performing arts centre and kinesiology labs.

“Around 142 local jobs will be supported during this stage.

“COVID-19 has been devastating for our community and expansions like this are part of our ongoing plan to get Queenslanders back to work.”

Foundation Principal Kym Amor said it was a day for the history books.

“Foxwell State Secondary College has been warmly welcomed by the local community and I feel incredibly proud to be appointed to lead this new school,” Mrs Amor said.

“Our school is focused on ensuring a world of opportunity and succuss for every student and one of our greatest achievements since opening in January has been the partnerships we have fostered between students, staff, parents and the wider community.

“I look forward to continuing to work closely with the school community as we continue to develop and grow.”
